Tridosha: Understanding Vata, Pitta & Kapha

Every human being is powered by three primary functional forces composed of the five natural elements. When in balance, they sustain vibrant health; when disturbed, they trigger discomfort and disease.

The Master Framework

The Biological Operating System of the Body

The word Dosha literally means "that which can become imbalanced." While all three are present in every living cell, each has specific bodily responsibilities, emotional traits, and governing elements.

Space + Air · Force of Motion

Vata Dosha

Governs movement, breath, and nerve impulses

Vata is light, dry, cold, mobile, and subtle. It is the king of the Doshas because it moves the other two through the channels of the body.

In Balance: Creative, adaptable, energetic, quick-thinking, and enthusiastic.
Out of Balance: Anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, constipation, and cracking joints.

Pitta Dosha

Governs digestion, metabolism, and intellect

Pitta is hot, sharp, light, oily, and spreading. It transforms food into living cellular tissue, regulates body heat, and sharpens visual and mental perception.

In Balance: Sharp intelligence, warm radiant skin, strong appetite, and natural leadership.
Out of Balance: Acid reflux, skin inflammation, anger, heartburn, and ulcers.

Earth + Water · Force of Structure

Kapha Dosha

Governs lubrication, stability, and immunity

Kapha is heavy, cold, moist, stable, and soft. It provides physical tissue mass, cushions the joints, moistens mucous membranes, and supports deep stamina.

In Balance: Calm demeanor, strong immunity, endurance, patience, and sturdy bone density.
Out of Balance: Sluggishness, weight gain, congestion, fluid retention, and depression.

"Dosha Dhatu Mala Moolam Hi Shariram |"
— Sushruta Samhita, Sutrasthana 15.3
"The human body is rooted in the three Doshas (governing energies), seven Dhatus (cellular tissue layers), and three Malas (eliminated waste products). When these are in harmony, life is sustained."
