Herbs & Medicines: Sacred Botanicals and Classical Pharmacy

Ayurvedic pharmacology does not view medicinal plants as isolated chemical molecules. A herb is a complete living intelligence possessing specific tastes (Rasa), post-digestive effects (Vipaka), bio-energetic potencies (Veerya), and unique therapeutic affinities (Prabhava). Explore our wild-crafted botanicals, multi-herb classical formulations, and standards of pharmaceutical purity.

The 5 Primary Classical Preparations (Pancha Vidha Kalpana)

The foundational bedrock of Ayurvedic pharmaceutical formulation defined by Charaka over two millennia ago.

1. Swarasa

Fresh Expressed Botanical Juice

The most potent and rapid-acting form. Freshly crushed leaves and stems (such as Tulsi or Ginger) expressed for immediate clinical administration.

2. Kalka

Fresh Herb Moist Paste

Herbs ground into a uniform fine paste with water. Used both internally as digestive boluses and externally as therapeutic poultices (Lepa).

3. Kwatha / Kashayam

Simmered Medicated Decoction

Hard roots and barks boiled down to one-fourth water volume. The cornerstone of Kerala internal medicine for flushing vascular toxins and calming Pitta-Kapha.

4. Hima

Cold Water Botanical Infusion

Delicate aromatic botanicals soaked in cold water overnight. Preserves volatile oils and delivers gentle, deeply cooling Pitta pacification (e.g. Coriander Hima).

5. Phanta

Hot Steeped Tisane

Herbs steeped in freshly boiled water and strained once cool. Light on digestion, perfect for kindling sluggish Agni without causing gastric irritation.

6. Sneha Kalpana

Medicated Oils & Clarified Butters

Herbs simmered with sesame oil or grass-fed ghee until all water evaporates. Delivers lipophilic active ingredients across blood-brain and cellular barriers.
