How is Your Digestive Fire Burning?
Agni governs not only stomach digestion (Jatharagni), but cellular enzyme reactions and tissue synthesis. Classical texts describe four functional states of Agni:
Samagni
Optimal DigestionEffortless digestion, regular hunger at proper meal times, clear mind, consistent energy, and clean daily elimination without gas or heaviness.
Vishamagni
Variable DigestionUnpredictable hunger; sometimes ravenous, sometimes unable to eat. Leads to bloating, intestinal rumbling, dry stool, and alternating constipation.
Tikshnagni
Excessive HeatIntense, ravenous hunger that burns through meals too quickly. Causes acid reflux, burning sensations in the stomach, irritability, and loose stools.
Mandagni
Slow DigestionLow metabolic fire. Even small meals feel heavy for hours. Produces thick white tongue coating, morning lethargy, mucus, and slow weight gain.
